The goal of the iRacing.com experience is simple: to make each lap driven in simulation as valid as a lap driven on the real-world race circuit.

To achieve this exceptionally high level of realism, iRacing.com uses its pioneering, proprietary application of three-dimensional laser scanning technology to create two key features.

The first is a series of highly detailed sight-pictures. These images, like frames in a movie filmed from an in-car camera, are driver’s-eye views that allow iRacing.com drivers to see specific points of a lap: braking points, turn-in points, or the apex of a corner, for example.

iRacing.com’s sight-pictures are the most accurate and complete ever offered in a racing simulation. You see exactly where you are on the racetrack at any given millisecond, receiving the instantaneous, granular visual input racers require to refine their performance lap after lap.

In addition to its sight-picture visuals, iRacing.com replicates the precise physical features of each track’s racing surface. Our laser scanning technology produces a mathematical ‘bump map’ of the track’s camber, cracks, undulations, and patches – recording every millimeter of the surface. A series of “point clouds” capture the three-dimensional profile of the track surface and adjacent curbing.

Combine this mathematically-precise surface mapping with iRacing.com’s hyper-accurate sight-pictures, and you have a powerful tool that allows even drivers at the highest levels of professional motorsport to use their virtual seat time to hone their skills and improve their real-world performance.

GTR2 offers many different game modes – Championships, Single Races, Practice, 24hr Races, Time Trials and the Driving School. The Official Championships consist of the 2003 and 2004 FIA GT Championship series. However, unlike its predecessor, GTR2 offers smaller unlockable championships as well as the ability to create custom championships.

Another major addition to the game series is the inclusion of a driving school. This teaches the user racing techniques, and allows the user to practice them, unlocking rewards in the process.

The 24hr races demonstrate the new dynamic day and night cycles very well. The transition between day and night is seamless and steady, unlike in the original where the race had to be paused whilst the new time of day was loaded. The day and night cycles can also be experienced by changing the speed of which the time of day passes during a race weekend. Selections here can be accelerated up to 60x.

rFactor takes Customize, Control and Connect as the theme of the game. The game is built to be very mod community friendly so it’s easy to import new skins and tracks and even completely new physics models into the game.

There is a very active mod community on the internet for anyone interested in searching for them. Beyond just the appearance of your car and the raceway you are going to run on there are many selections possible to customize the handling and performance of your car in the garage. In fact there are so many that it’s a bewildering array of choices for the novice racer.

Experienced racers (or just those obsessively into racing in general) will likely have no trouble understanding the multiple options, but if you are new to the genre be prepared to spend a lot of time learning about the various options available. The game ships with no tutorial mode and a woefully short section in the manual for beginners.

The only way to learn is to dive in and learn the hard way or search for lists of hints on the internet.

GT Legends is a sports car racing simulator developed by Simbin for the PC. It is based on the 2005 FIA Historic Racing Championships for GTC and TC cars of the 1960s and 1970s. This is a modern-day championship for historic cars, and so the circuit designs in GT Legends are those of the modern era, contrasting with games such as Grand Prix Legends which are actually set in historic times.

GT Legends has the same graphics engine as rFactor (developed by Image Space Incorporated), a similar physics engine but different multiplayer code. In the press, it was highly praised for its exceptionally good quality sounds and realism.
